Let's talk about the new Los Campesinos! for a minute. With all the charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of low-grade bank clerks, the Welsh and the Belgians unite in what Nigel Farage describes as the true unifying force in all (non-)existing non-countries of the world: Kings (or Queens, whatever your fancy), football and lager. If it comes down to royalty, we don't have much to quarrel about: we couldn't care less. When it comes down to the most beautiful game of them all, there's no eyebrows raised anymore when the Red Lions lose to the Peoples Republic of Tadzikistan by 0-5. So kudos to the Welsh here. Thank God (or Budha or whatever imaginary friend you prefer) us Belgians are second to none when it comes down to beer.

Since the weatherforecasters of the world have united in stating that Global Warming will cause pretty much the same kind of climate everywhere around the globe, it's safe to say that the atmospheric similarities between Wales and Belgium will probably increase instead of decline. Fact: both aren't real countries; I'll grant Farage that. Whereas the Welsh are basically run by the Brits over in Westminster, the Belgians are in fact ruled by pretty much everybody: the EU, Brussels (to us this is not the same), the Flemish Government (if you are a Walloon) or the Walloon Government (if you are Flemish). You have to be a Belgian to understand that this is no mistake. And by the way, we also have a little German addendum somewhere in the East. Furthermore, some people in Belgium fear that we are about to be ruled by Islam but luckily, the Smurfs are in there with an equal opportunity. Anything can happen in this surreal country.

Another thing these two, truly amazing nations have in common is that they both need more post-coital and less post-rock. We need to lighten up, seriously. And is there anything else like a Los Campesinos! album to come and cheer us up? Well, sex, obviously. But besides that, in the build-up to, sort to speak, you can't go wrong with this Romance is Boring-stuff. Of course it isn't boring. Far from it. Thought you should know...

Ik was eind vorig jaar al helemaal veslaafd geraakt aan hun sneak release van "The sea is a good place to think about the future" en het blijft ook één van de sterkhouders op deze plaat. Een beetje exemplarisch voor wat ze op deze plaat met hun sound proberen te doen. De kakafonie wordt niet overboord gegooid, maar subtieler benaderd door die te juxtaposeren tegen ingetogener stukken en beter te kanaliseren. De orchestratie staat als een huis en tekstueel is het alweer smullen van begin tot einde.

De "familie" Campesino heeft het nog steeds over jongetjes en meisjes die elkaar liefhebben/de duvel aandoen en alle subtiele nuances die daar tussenin liggen. Over onzekerheid, angst en verdiet. Maar ook over enthousiasme, humor en geluk. En laten we vooral de sex niet vergeten. Ik deed recentelijk een online test die je levenshouding zou moeten opleveren. Ik dacht altijd van mezelf dat ik het klassieke voorbeeld van de post-modernist was. Maar blijkbaar ben ik existentialist. En da's nog een graadje erger. Ik verdenk Gareth Campesino er sterk van in het zelfde straatje ziek te zijn. "We are but two atheists in lust, you know, we gotta make our own luck."

Muzikaal gezien citeren ze als grote voorbeelden voor deze plaat oa. Pavement, Blur, Guided by Voices en Deerhoof. Voor mij mag je daar alvast Sigur Ros (het speelse), Bearsuit (het gekke) en Urusei (Yatsura) aan toevoegen. Mooie momenten zijn er genoeg op deze plaat, maar sta me toe om "I just sighed. I just sighed, just so you know" en "Straight in at 101" een eervolle vermelding te geven. Eerstgenoemde omwille van de variatie en de heerlijke outro. De tweede vanwege de originele en hilarische kijk op het universele thema van de verloren liefde.
